Biography
Sharon Levin has been a performer, flute choir conductor and flute teacher for over 35 years. She was principal flutist of the New Jersey Pops Orchestra for over 14 years. She has conducted flute choirs, and has given Master Classes at The International Flute Festival in Costa Rica for several years and has been the flute choir conductor for the Young Artist Philharmonic since 2007 (with a gap of time while she was living and performing in Upstate New York from 2010-2013). While she was upstate she was a regular soloist and principal flutist with the Broad Street Orchestra and a sub for an Opera Orchestra. She also served on the audition panel for the Empire State Youth Orchestra and taught privately.
Sharon Levin has lectured for the National Flute Association, New York Flute Club, New Jersey Music Educators Conference and other Cultural Institutions on her publications and recordings of Ecuadorian Mestizo Music. Her articles about this music were published in The Flutists Quarterly magazine and the New York Flute Club Newsletter. Over the years Ms. Levin’s students have won top awards with the CMEA All State Program, Western Regional Program, SYAP Concerto Competitions, Staples HS Concerto Competitions, Honor Bands, NY NYSSMA Programs, College Auditions among other musical programs She was on the music faculty of Stevens Institute of Technology, and Norwalk Community College. She also taught at Newark Academy, The Hudson School, Sacred Heart Academy and Stevens Co-Op. She teachers out of her private studio in Westport.
Ms. Levin has won several awards and among which has been featured at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall (where she performed on several occasions) and Merkin Concert Hall in NYC. She has performed concertos and/or concerts in France, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, Israel, Ecuador, (where she was a concerto soloist with with National Symphony among other performances), Brazil, (where she was a concerto soloist with the Brazilian Symphony in Rio de Janiero), the North East United States, Texas, and California.
Ms. Levin has a Master of Music Degree from Manhattan School of Music in Flute Performance. She also studied in Paris, France and holds a “Certificat de Musique de Chambre” from the Ecole Normale de Musique. She has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Sarah Lawrence College. As a hobby she enjoys keeping up with French, Spanish and Italian.
