She has helped me reach all of my flute dreams - from Western Regionals to All State to prestigious music scholarships - and now I am getting a minor in music at Harvard College. Along with flute, she has taught me so much about music theory and history along the way. She has wisdom so far outside of flute and has a story behind every technique she teaches. She taught my daughter the basics of how to hold and care for a flute, walked us through our first flute purchase, continued to teach through COVID, in person when we could, and virtually when we could not. She has a tremendous amount of experience, insight, and has a critical ear for tone. She is encouraging, exacting (in a positive way), and inspiring. With her teaching, my daughter has successfully auditioned for a variety of selective band and orchestra ensembles over the years, and prepared confidently for both individual and group performances, now at the high school level. “I have been a flute student of Mrs.Levin’s for almost ten years (since I was about 8 years old) in the Tuning into Music program with Greenwich Alliance and in the Young Artists Philharmonic Flute Choir. In this time, Mrs.Levin has taught me priceless skills and discipline with the instrument and music theory. We always begin lessons with nailing down fundamentals like scales, rhythm, and other basics. By focusing so much on the fundamentals, it made me become a lot more in touch and comfortable with the instrument when I started seeing the scales and rhythms we practiced in songs we were playing. Sharon has always emphasized the importance of discipline and practicing with the instrument and through this I have been taught to see and be proud of the growth made when I practiced every day.
